A Journey of Resilience and Innovation
In the quiet community of Awudome Avenuie in Ghana’s Volta Region, a group of 45 women, many of them single mothers and widows are rewriting the story of economic empowerment. Their journey is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the power of community-driven solutions.
From Challenge to Opportunity
When the women first came together to explore business opportunities, their idea was to establish a corn-milling venture. It made sense at the time, as corn milling was in demand. But during their planning, a new mill opened in the community. Instead of pressing forward and competing for limited customers, the women decided to pivot.
Through honest conversations and collective decision-making, they identified another pressing need: cassava and pepper grinding. Both are staples in daily meals, and yet access to affordable grinding services was scarce. This decision reflected not just practicality, but bold entrepreneurship — a willingness to adapt and build something sustainable.
Building a Business, Building Confidence
By mid-August, the vision had come to life. The women welcomed their cassava and pepper grinding machines and received comprehensive training on how to operate and maintain them. The commissioning of the machines wasn’t just about technology; it was about confidence.
For the first time, the women were running a community-based enterprise of their own. The machines are already reducing the burden of travelling long distances for food processing while providing an income stream that supports their families.
Beyond Grinding: Diversifying for Resilience
The women’s ambition doesn’t stop with one business. To strengthen their livelihoods, they also undertook mushroom production training, gaining skills in cultivation and exploring new ways to diversify income. Their eagerness to learn and grow highlights their determination to build multiple streams of income — a key step toward long-term financial independence.
They have also expressed interest in soap-making, an idea that will allow them to expand their enterprise further, ensuring that every member of the group has an opportunity to contribute and benefit.
A Ripple of Change
What makes this project special is not just the machines or the training, but the sense of ownership the women now carry. They are no longer waiting for opportunities; they are creating them. Their decisions, their leadership, and their teamwork are setting an example for the community — showing that empowerment is not given, it is built.
From cassava and pepper grinding to mushroom farming and future ventures in soap-making, the women of Awudome Avenuie are proving that with the right tools and support, they can transform their own lives and inspire those around them.
This is more than a business project. It is a story of dignity, resilience, and the belief that when women rise, entire communities rise with them.
Driving the SDGs Locally
This project demonstrates how grassroots initiatives can drive global goals forward:
- No Poverty (SDG 1): Creating livelihoods and reducing vulnerability.
- Zero Hunger (SDG 2): Improving food security and nutrition.
- Gender Equality (SDG 5): Placing women in leadership roles within their community.
- Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8): Generating employment and supporting entrepreneurship.
- Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12): Encouraging sustainable farming and value addition.
Gratitude
We are deeply grateful to Heb Ffin for sponsoring this initiative under the EmpowerHer project. Their support has unlocked new possibilities for women who have always been resourceful but lacked access to the tools and capital to succeed.
